ACUPUNCTURE FOR NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES

Acupuncture for Neuralgia
For headaches, migraine and neuralgia, acupuncture can be very effective and studies have shown its sigbnificant effectiveness over standard drug treatment.

Acupuncture for Stroke Sequelae and Stroke Paresis
Ischaemic cerebrovascular disease can be effectively treated with acupuncture and studies have shown a greater improvement in nerve function with acupuncture than conventional treatment. Studies have also provided evidence to show that acupuncture's significant effect in the treatment of both sequelae of stroke and also its paresis (loss of movement). In fact, these studies concluded that acupuncture for hemiplegia due to cerebral infarction was more effective than standard therapy and more effective than physiotherapy for these conditions. Hemiplegia due to other causes such as brain surgery can also be improved by acupuncture as can aphasia (loss of speech) caused by similar cerebrovascular disorders.

The WHO (World Health Organisation, 2003) state that as early treatment of hemiplegia due to cerebral haemorrhage and cerebral infarction with physiotherapy is unsatisfactory, acupuncture is advised as the primary treatment. Hemiplegia due to other causes such as brain surgery can also be improved by acupuncture as can aphasia (loss of speech) caused by cerebrovascular disorders.

For facial disorders, Bell's palsy can be treated with acupuncture as can trigeminal neuralgia.

As acupuncture can have a hypnotic effect, it is also effective in the treatment of insomnia.
